2012 Deep Sea Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir

2012 is considered one California’s best vintages of the past decade.  The fruit from the 2012 Deep Sea Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir was grown in one of the most highly regarded vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley, the Garey Ranch. Previous vintages of Deep Sea Pinot Noir such as our award winning 2009 Deep Sea Pinot Noir have contained percentages of Garey Ranch fruit, and we have continued the tradition of quality with the 2012 vintage.

The 2012 harvest in the Santa Maria Valley was a nearly perfect growing season. The year was mild and dry, with good crop levels, and no detrimental heat waves as harvest approached. The ripening was slow and steady, and we picked the Clones 667, 777 and Clone 115 (the dominant clone) from September 10th through September 13th.  We co-fermented the clones in tank and then transferred the blends into French Oak barrels. Our fermentation lasted 16 days. We started with gentle pump overs and eventually added in very gentle punch-downs toward the end.

As always, our focus for oak barrel selection is driven by our desire for balance; too much oak and not enough fruit is not desirable, nor is too much fruit and not enough oak. The flavors of the dominant Clone #115 were very delicate, so we opted for a minimalist approach. Instead of all new oak, we chose to use a small percentage (30%) of single fill French Oak barrels that would bring a delicate amount of oak flavor to this bright and elegant Pinot Noir. Showcasing the high quality fruit was the focus, as was creating a well-structured wine. This vintage certainly spoke softly to us, and shows restraint in the finished wine.

The bright red cherry fruit aromatics are followed by a slight hint of toasted oak.  The entry is elegant and soft, layered with cherry and leather, and the mid palette displays a refreshing acidity. This wine is balanced throughout by notes of delicious fruit, delicate oak, and is framed with classic rose petals, minerals, and earthy tones. Please join us and enjoy this wonderful Pinot Noir.
