2013 Conway Pinot Noir Sta Rita Hills, Santa Barbara County
The world class fruit from the Santa Rita Hills AVA in Santa Barbara County has produced some of the most spectacular Pinot Noirs in California. Not surprisingly, grapes are often unattainable, as producers clamor to source their next vintage from this promising region. Luckily, the 2013 harvest was the twin brother to the wonderful 2012 vintage. The growing year was calm, sunny, temperate and provided above average crop levels. One of the premier vineyards in the AVA produced a crop of some of our favorite Pinot Noir Clones, and we were incredibly excited about the quality.
All the fruit was de-stemmed and meticulously sorted. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel until the completion of both primary fermentation and malo-lactic fermentation and then barreled down into 60 gallon neutral French Oak barrels. The final blend was racked into tank and transferred into primarily neutral French Oak barrels. Aged for 14 months.
As we went through our winter tasting meetings we kept coming back to 3 different groups of barrels that all showed a remarkable elegance with intense floral notes. The clonal mix of these three lots had clones 667, 777 and 115. Realizing we had a unique profile manifesting in these particular lots, we determined to protect those barrels for the remaining period of barrel aging. We racked those barrels out of the original new barrels and backfilled back into primarily neutral barrels and a few single-fill barrels. In the resting wine we captured those enticing floral notes while the mid palate and finish blossomed into a decidedly beautiful Pinot Noir.
Elegant and fragrant, the first sip pulls you into a seamless balance of strawberry and black cherry flavors. Polished, precise, and pure fruit flavors emerge from the glass. Restrained yet complete, from start to finish.
The 2013 Conway Pinot Noir Sta Rita Hills is the perfect example of how beautiful, restrained, and refined California Pinot Noir can be. A small production of 900 cases produced.
