2013 Conway Reserve Syrah, White Hawk Vineyard, Santa Barbara County
Grapes from the White Hawk Vineyard are highly sought-after, and considered to be some of the finest in the Santa Ynez Valley. As is the case with any grapes that are in high demand, the supply is often scarce. This is our third vintage of Syrah from this phenomenal vineyard site, and we were fortunate to secure a contract for the 2013 vintage. The resulting wine is as spectacular as we had dreamt it would be. The 2013 harvest was almost identical conditions to the wonderful 2012 vintage. The growing year was calm, sunny, temperate and above average crop levels. The White Hawk Vineyard is a sandy and loamy, and due to high level of exposure and its particular soil profile, tends to self-regulate its crop load. We anticipated about six tons of fruit, but only received about 3.7 tons. Still, we were happy to have any grapes from this coveted site. Every third day during October, we visited our rows to take samples and taste the fruit, looking for the perfect ripeness and balance. Finally, on October 15th, at 26.3 degrees brix and spectacular flavors, we picked. Previous vintages of Syrah from this vineyard have been favorites of our family, and we consider the 2011 vintage to be the one of the best wines we have ever made. Because of how well we loved the 2011, we focused again on the 877 clone for the 2013. This clone tends to highlight juicier dark fruit notes without becoming overly “brooding”. Our New French Oak selections included our favorite coopers Francois Feres, Damy and Gillet. The must was gently pumped over in the beginning of fermentation, and we later switched into morning and afternoon punch-downs. This Syrah went through fermentation in a textbook manner. Never racked during its entire elevage, this Syrah was aged on its lees for roughly 20 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine greets you with abundant aromatic notes of ripe blueberries, hints of savory herbs and roasted meats. The texture can best be described as thick satin. Luscious, rich berry flavors with a perfect whisper of vanilla and caramel barrel notes follow. The finish is long, lingering, and complete. The 2013 Conway Reserve Syrah White Hawk Vineyard is a gem from a very special vineyard. Designed to age, this beautiful wine will continue to enthrall for years to come.
